10 Weird Hair Tricks That Really Work:

Let’s be honest. We love learning new hairstyles, dyeing our hair new colours, and doing a DIY hair mask on a Sunday night, but when it comes down to it, the more shortcuts we can take with our hair, the better. That doesn’t mean cutting corners, necessarily, but simply learning the worthwhile tricks that really work. Along the way of talking to hairstylists backstage at Fashion Week and trading secrets with our best friends, we collect a ton of hair tricks, the 10 best of which we’re sharing with you below.

1. Want subtle highlights

for the summer but don’t want to empty your wallet? Squeeze out an entire lemon into a dish, dip a clean toothbrush into the juice, and gently comb it through your hair. Then, go sit in the sun for about 45 minutes to an hour (wearing SPF, of course!). Do this once every two weeks or so and the lemon juice will naturally lighten your hair in the sun.

2. Get rid of static

in your hair by using dryer sheets. With one sheet, smooth it over your entire head going from root to ends. To avoid getting static altogether, rub the dryer sheets on your brushes and combs before using them on your hair.

3. Make your ponytail look fuller

by using the hair clip trick. Pull your hair into a ponytail at the back of the crown of your head and secure it with a hair tie. Separate it into two sections (top and bottom), and with a small-to-medium sized claw hair clip, clip hair at the base of the ponytail, underneath the top section. Place the top section of hair over the clip and spray a bit of dry shampoo to get a fuller texture and hide the clip.

4. To remove all of the build up that can happen in your hair (oil and product build up can clog up your scalp and put a halt on your hair growing!) mix baking soda in water to create a paste, and use that to wash your hair. Rinse the baking soda out with a mixture of apple cider vinegar for a completely natural, clean head of hair.

5. Baby hairs and cowlicks are incredibly annoying, but there’s a way to tame them. Spray a toothbrush with strong hold hairspray and comb down the baby hairs and cowlicks so they’ll sit with the rest of your hair.
6. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase will help to prevent hair breakage and damage that can happen in the middle of the night as you toss and turn. Cotton and other textures mixed with your hair moving back and forth can create friction, which is what can cause the hair to break.

7. A lot of the time, girls with brunette or red hair shy away from dry shampoo because of the white residue that is often left over. DIY your own dry shampoo for darker hair so that you can skip washing your hair! Mix 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons of corn starch, and a dash of cinnamon. Apply at your roots and shake through with your fingers for a refreshed head of hair!

8. If it takes you a very long time to straighten your hair, you may have the temperature setting on your flat iron too low, which means you need to go over the same pieces of hair multiple times, which can cause more damage. Instead, turn up the heat (to a mid-high temperature) so that you can go for a single pass and decrease damage.

9. Protect your hair from chlorine

in the pool by completely wetting your hair and saturating it in conditioner, leaving it wet. Your hair will soak up the chlorine-free water and conditioner instead of the pool water, which will prevent the damage and colour turning that chlorine can do.

10. Reduce frizz

by drying your hair with a cotton t-shirt instead of a towel, then blow drying on the cool setting. Regular towels can cause a ton of friction which disrupt the cuticle and create frizz, so cotton t-shirts absorb water without causing friction. Make sure to squeeze your hair, not to rub it, while drying (which can, surprise, create more frizz-making friction). Blow drying on the cool setting to keep the cuticle closed, which won’t make as much of a frizzy mess as the hot setting.

1. Exfoliating Face Mask

I’ve found one of the better concoctions for you ladies to try out yourselves; this exfoliating mask with oatmeal, cucumber and avocado is certainly a winner. The avo is packed with Vitamin E, the cucumber is a natural anti-inflammatory and the will gently buff away dead skins cells when you take the mask off.

2. Kiwi Cleanser

This home-made facial cleanser is great for oily skin and its tasty ingredients make it almost good enough to eat! You’ll need one peeled kiwi fruit, a couple of tablespoons of natural yoghurt, a tablespoon of honey and a drop of orange essential oil. Mix these all together until they look thick and creamy, apply to damp skin, wash and rinse. Kiwi is chock-a-block with invigorating Vitamin C and acts as a natural detergent, gently breaking down oiliness on the skin’s surface.

3. Berry Hand and Foot Exfoliant

This fruity foot and hand treatment scrubs off dead and dry skin cells, smells delicious and will leave your skin feeling fabulously soft. To make it you’ll need about 10 strawberries or a handful of raspberries, a glug of olive oil and another handful of coarse sea salt or yellow sugar. Puree the strawberries in a blender, mix this up with other ingredients and massage over your hands and feet. Berries are a great natural source of antioxidants which fight skin-dulling free radicals and they’re also super high in Vitamin C.

4. Face Wash

One of the most efficient and green uses of baking soda is as a face wash. Dilute 2 teaspoons of baking soda with 1 teaspoon of warm water in a bowl and mix to a soft paste with your finger. Wet your face with warm water and apply the paste in a gentle circular motion. Rinse thoroughly and pat your face dry with a soft towel. It’s a great way to remove make-up.

5.Raw Honey

Raw honey is one of the best beauty secrets from your kitchen for radiant and glowing skin! All you need to do is thoroughly cleanse your skin and remove all makeup. Apply a teaspoon or two of raw honey to your face and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Rinse your face off and pat dry. You can follow with your favourite moisturizer if you like! Do this 1-2 times weekly to have glowing results.

6.Olive Oil

Olive oil makes a very healthy deep conditioner for your hair. I like to apply some to wet hair and wrap it in a warm or hot towel. Leave the towel on for about 20 minutes before shampooing and conditioning your hair as normal. Depending  on how often you use hot tools on your hair, you should deep condition your hair weekly or every week and a half.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar

In order for your hair to style better and look healthier, you should strip it of build-up about every month. The easiest and most natural way to do this is in the shower with apple cider vinegar! Shampoo your hair, then mix ½ cup of apple cider vinegar with ½ cup of water. Pour this mixture over your hair, then rinse and condition as usual.

8.Coconut Oil

Don’t spend money on an eye makeup remover! Instead, use coconut oil! It’s natural and won’t irritate even the most sensitive eyes. It’s also safe for contact lens wearers! Warm up a little in the palm of your hand and rub it onto your eyes with a cotton ball to remove every trace of makeup.

9.Avocado

Avocado is a lifesaver for anyone who suffers from dry skin. Because it’s rich in fats and oils, it has strong moisturizing properties! Mash up a fresh avocado and apply it to your skin for 5 minutes. Here are a few other ideas: Strawberries are great for acne-prone skin, and bananas are perfect for sallow skin!

10.Eggs

Eggs are known for their ability to leave hair super shiny! Full of fats, oils and protein, you can use egg whites as a hair mask, leaving it on till it dries completely and then shampooing it out. You can use just the yokes for a facial mask, leaving hydrated and toned skin. For a dandruff treatment, instead of reaching for chemical-laden dandruff shampoo, use beaten egg yokes and massage them into the scalp before washing with chemical-free shampoo. What an easy way to achieve glowing skin with one product found in our refrigerator!

11.Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe has so many beneficial properties! For skin, aloe is most commonly known for sunburn care as it reduces inflammation and cools the skin. According to a Livestrong article by Traci Joy, aloe vera is used for cell rejuvenation- both the synthesis of collagen and the production of hyaluronic acid in skin, which are central for healthy, young and moisturized skin. A depletion of these cell products will cause saggy and wrinkled skin. On top of that, it's used for acne scarring and other inflamed skin conditions. What a natural alternative to those expensive facial creams! And a bonus, an aloe vera plant is easily maintained in your own home!
